Every day I receive requests to write articles, give interviews, attend literary festivals, visit schools, read books in need of supportive blurbs... It’s hugely flattering, but if I accepted only a fraction of these invitations they would take over my life... After the publication of Curious Incident I did a lot of publicity. It seemed a good way of giving something back to the readers who had bought so many copies and to my publishers who had sold them. But after eighteen months it was sending me crazy... So for the moment I’m saying a polite ‘No’ to everything unless there are exceptional reasons... I’m a writer. Writing is how I want to spend most of my time on the planet. Nearly all the people I have met while publicising Curious Incident were kind and enthusiastic and charming, but every day I spent in their company was a day in which I got no writing done.
